Studio Thinking from the Start: The K–8 Art Educator’s Handbook (No. 339)
JILLIAN HOGAN, LOIS HETLAND, DINAE B. JAQUITH, and ELLEN WINNER

Studio Thinking: The Real Benefits of Visual Arts Education changed the conversation about quality arts education. Many elementary and middle school teachers found the original Studio Thinking concepts applicable to their classrooms and created age-appropriate ways to illuminate Studio Habits of Mind for their students. This new publication shows how the eight Studio Habits of Mind and four Studio Structures can be used successfully with younger students in a range of socioeconomic contexts and school environments.

Collected here are ideas and resources appropriate for these students, many created by innovative teachers whose ideas can be scaled up by high school teachers. Their ideas serve as springboards for readers to design their own Studio Thinking—rich approaches appropriate for their particular students and classrooms. Co-published with Teachers College Press.

• Habit-by-habit definitions, classroom examples, and related visual artist examples
• Full color mini-posters to illustrate each of the eight Studio Habits of Mind
• Sample templates for students to use as they plan and discuss works of art
• Innovative approaches to assessment and strategies for implementation
• Suggestions for using Studio Thinking for arts education advocacy
